  • Statement:

If this recent presidential election has taught us anything, it is how our society greatly lacks an objective mainstream media. The corporate control and influence has never been so evident as it is now. KPFK is one of our last remaining independent beacons of truth, but it has been greatly underfunded and poorly managed. I have led and helped turn around the Courage Campaign into a strong financially stable statewide progressive force and I believe that I can help KPFK achieve its untapped potential in much the same way. KPFK can be the true progressive voice in LA and all of CA, while remaining unbought and unbossed.

    Answers to Candidate Questionnaire
    1. In what ways is the station moving in a positive direction, that you would want to continue or perhaps improve?

I do not think the station has been moving in a positive direction for some time due to its unstable and underfunded financial situation.

    2. In what ways is the station moving in a negative direction, that you would want to stop or change? What changes would you work for?

I believe that it has had a lot of turnover and loss of key people like Sonali. I think this has led to a very poor overall morale as well as a perception among listeners and possible donors that KPFK is a sinking ship. I would immediately try to change internal and public perception and rebuild confidence and support.

    3. What key experience, connections, skills or traits would you bring to the Local Station Board to advance the station's mission?

When I took over as executive chairman of the Courage Campaign, the organization was in poor financial shape and with marriage equality largely settled, struggling to maintain its relevancy in progressive politics. I helped redefine our mission and personally worked to build and develop relationships with progressive groups, labor, and elected officials to show how we could be the progressive glue in our state that brought them all together. It made us really relevant and we thrived. I believe KPFK should play a similar role and become the de facto progressive glue on air.

    4. What ideas do you have for helping the station and the Pacifica Foundation meet the financial challenges currently being faced?

I would like to establish KPFK as the on air source for all things progressive and better engage our progressive organizations, labor, and even progressive politicians to support KPFK through donations and on air appearances to help get the word our and gain support for progressive issues and legislation they are working on. I want to build a real progressive community and see KPFK as being very relevant to this. I would like to see KPFK host candidate forums, expert panels and symposiums on issues that matter, and even host some concerts by progressive artists. Above all, by engaging fellow progressive donors and all the Bernie supporters who gave an average of $27, we can revitalize and grow KPFK to become a real leader and voice!
